Fedora 9 feature list leaked
I'm not kidding. Yeah, fedora 8 dawning upon us but fedora 9 is being conceived. Let's make some comments and help.
This is my first class at the features list, I'll probably go deeper into it.
New GNOME Display Manager
Much enhanced rewrite of GNOME Display Manager
This is kind of nice. In each new release, fedora updates the GNOME desktop and makes it better. And KDE will be updated too. Fedora seems to have a intimate relation with GNOME. But I hope the fedora team keeps themselvs away from the fire that one OS has one desktop and that's it. Fedora should always offer the best variety.
Fedora Astronomy Spin
Live media spin (that fits on CD) containing a set of tools for astronomers and astrophysicists
It's always to have new packages I guess...But I won't be using it on my computer.
PackageKit
PackageKit is a distribution neutral alternative package management frontend fully supporting the yum backend
This should be really useful, especially people who don't know linux find linux hard primarily because all the compiling etc you need to do to install softwares. I would urge fedora adopt some sort of software management tool like Ubuntu's where you can just click and it takes care of anything. And I am sure we'll never lose the command line stuff.
RandR Support
Use the capabilities offered by the X randr X extension throughout the desktop.
I don't really know what this is.
Bluetooth enhancements
Lots and lots of Bluetooth enhancements
Fedora has been increasing its bluetooth support since 6 I think, when you had a little process at start up called "bluetooth" :) I don't have any bluetooth advice but I guess this is the trend and funny how much enhancement can be done.
More NetworkManager
System wide NetworkManager integration
This should reduce a lot of trouble. Who doesn't use some sort of network. It is not enough to support "some". We want Fedora to support everything. Fedora 7 works great offering working-out-of-the-box support for intel 2200bg sorts of wireless cards that are quite common on Dell and other laptops. Now the technology is not new or hidden in the windows world. I hope the linux community can beat microsoft with their simplicity and efficiency. I guess enterprise users won't care about this but I think this is all individual users like me care about. Better support of hardware= better system.
Presto
Support for binary delta packages for updates. Saves heavy amount of bandwidth and time
I do not really update. But it's good to know that you don't need to leave your computer on for hours to get the fixes.
RPM and Yum Enhancements
Faster performance. Less memory consumption
Good. Small enhancements accumulated makes big differences.
TeXLive 2007
Replace teTeX with TeXLive
I don't use TeX so I'll point you to a comparison of the two to see how big an improvement we've got. (Or someone suggest a good article.)
Thinkfinger
Better integration of fingerprint readers
... I don't really use this either.
Better Volume Control
More integration of PulseAudio and a better user interface for volume controls that exposes PulseAudio concepts and enhancements
PulseAudio is new in fedora 8 and we'll see how it goes.
Wevisor
Generating custom spins of Fedora via a web interface
Windows LiveUSB installer
Windows app that takes a Fedora ISO and a USB key and makes a LiveUSB out of it.
LiveUSB persistence
If I use yum or alter settings on my USB key, it is remembered across reboots. Use another USB key as /home.
The last three are very interesting. The operating systems are going LIVE inevitably. As I pointed out in my post "what operating systems ought to be like", the future operating systems will only go more LIVE and more personalized. I feel really satisfied that fedora is taking the steps.
And of course the list is subject to change etc. But i'd say that's 80% of the truth.
By the way, the fedora 9 wiki documents are already there.

And thanks for the fedora team who keep people who care like me posted!
