Fedora 8 freshly installed : report, review, problems, discussion, solution

This is a first impression:

I used hard drive installation method like in this post.

Record of my experience:

1. It happened a few times that /sbin/loader won't continue to load. It could be my burner's problem, the CDR's problem. It worked 80% of the time.

2. I had a "problem handling" notice that rebooted the system when I was clicking too crazily during installation. (I've installed Fedora 1 million times. I just wanna go next! )

3. Don't try to install the extras like XFCE etc. It is tempting, but I think the server's too busy or the repository things are not ready etc. It's just too slow.

4. The whole installing process lasted half an hour with me installing 1491 packages. I am installing from hard drive so a CD install will probably take twice as long. I have installed most packages and it seems the number of packages expanded 3/2 compared to what I usually install with fedora 7 and fedora 6. It used to be something like 1100 packages. The long installation time should really be attributed to FAT32. I recently discovered that it's much slower than NTFS. And I don't understand why fedora supports NTFS mounting in the system but not during the installation.

5. The dependencies check is much much faster. Probably giving thanks to the merge of fedora core and extras. We see good progress here. The fonts and styles are a rounded and kind of modern too.

6. It installed evince and Synaptics. Windows doesn't even install Synaptics driver...

7. Compiz is installed with gnome if you are a big fan of that.

8. There must be improvement with network management that I have not been able to go deep and explore yet but it took a long time for the system to realize that I didn't plug my cable in. And at a later time, again, at startup, my wireless network needs a password and cannot just be logged onto.

9. This is more of a gut feeling but the system has made a big stride in stablility. My hard drive is loaded much less. Windows 2003 used to beat fedora 6 and 7 in this aspect. Fedora 8 is so stable that you barely see your hard drive LED flash (And I suppose the LED is not controlled by the system but really a physical mechanism instead.).

10. It looks definitely beautiful, peaceful. It's good.

11. I want auto login and if you did not plug in the network cable or something, it takes really long for Fedora to move on to the next service. I think there should be some easy way to terminate the current service.

12. Grub is version 0.97 and I saw a 2 somewhere and I'm kind of confused if the two are the same or anything?

13. Startup is fast.

14. The WPA client, wpa_cli doesn't quite work. I could be connected to unsecured wireless network but when I run networkmanager, it gives me no reply. When I run wpa_cli, it says cannot connect to wpa_supplicant. I sure have the service running. I am mad now... Problem solved.

15. Yum appear to be slow. I used the graphical software manager and it took me 10 min. just to download thunderbird while my usually download speed such as downloading fedora with windows was like 1MB/s. I don't know if the repositories are still busy catering the people downloading fedora 8 or something.

This is about it today. A few pictures to entertain you :)

I'll keep expanding this. For most problems, you can find solutions here. And you should defintely look at lazy man's to speed up Fedora. It's short but improves performance much.
